By Dr. Beth Paxton

If you suffer from headaches – whether they be migraine or
sinus headaches – you might automatically think of popping a
pill. But for a more natural remedy — and one that’s gaining
momentum all the time — think about acupuncture for sinus
headache migrains.

The thought of acupuncture makes many people cringe. But the
art and craft of acupuncture is gaining popularity among people
who don’t want to take pain pills or other drugs, but who are
looking for natural, pure remedies.

Simply put, acupuncture is the delicate insertion of very thin
needles at various points on the body to relieve pain or promote
healing. Relief of sinus, tension and migraine headaches is a
common impetus for acupuncture treatment, but it’s used for a
variety of other needs, including healing after injury, relief
from the pain and discomfort of chemotherapy, and a variety of
other ailments and illnesses.

It’s believed that inserting the needles at specific points in
the body realigns the body’s electrical fields which helps to
relieve pain or promote the healing necessary for recovery from
injury or disease.

As for headaches, the use of acupuncture is gaining in
popularity thanks both to the acceptance the practice is gaining
in traditional circles, and reports that the practice is
effective in relieving headache pain.

A recent study showed that the use of acupuncture was effective
in relieving the pain of migraine headaches but experts aren’t
exactly sure why. They say it’s possible acupuncture has a
“placebo” effect, where the patient believes the treatment will
help and so it does, without much medical basis for the benefit
or relief.

Others say acupuncture works for migraine and sinus headaches
because the acupuncture needles are inserted specifically to
re-channel the body’s energy fields and produce a biochemical
change in the body’s blood serum.

If you suffer from sinus or migraine headaches, you know that
pain relief in the form of a pill can work. But after four or
six hours, the pain returns and you return to the medicine
cabinet for another “hit” of the pain-relieving drug. Experts
say that the use of acupuncture reduces your dependence on
pain-relief drugs, whether they are addictive or not. Over time
such drugs can cause liver or kidney damage, or ulcers. If you
need medication from your doctor, the drugs can become addictive
as well.

If you have long suffered from sinus or migraine headaches you
might have turned to the use of steroid injections for relief.
But these can very painful (unlike acupuncture, which most users
report is painless) and if used for a long period of time can
cause life-threatening side effects.

Acupuncture is a natural therapy that is a form of Chinese
medication. It involves inserting hair-thin needles into
specific points on the body to stimulate the body’s healing
abilities. Acupuncture can be used to heal and overcome a
variety of physical and mental health related problems.

Pain Relief

Acupuncture can aid in relieving pain. This is, in part, due to
the fact that acupuncture increases the body’s level of
endorphins, which are often referred to as “feel good”
chemicals. Acupuncture also helps normalize nerve impulses
because acupuncture points and the central nervous system are
connected.

The Immune System

Evidence has indicated that acupuncture strengthens the body’s
immune system and natural resistance. It has been shown that
there is an increase in white blood cells, as well as in the
level of Alpha, Beta, and Gamma Globulins after an acupuncture
treatment. Alpha and Beta Globulins are thought to help white
bloods cells better fight infection, while Gamma Globulins
assist in the production of immune antibodies.

Drug Recovery

Acupuncture assists in the recovery of drug and alcohol
addiction. It does this by helping to reduce withdrawal
symptoms, decreasing cravings, relieving tension, and helping
people relax. In fact, acupuncture is so successful in drug
treatment recovery that many clinics throughout the United
States use acupuncture as an integral component of their
programs.

Musculoskeletal Disorders

Acupuncture has the ability to release muscle tension, as well
as tension in the connective tissues. This allows the lymphatic,
nervous, and circulatory systems to function more efficiently.
For these reasons, acupuncture is helpful in both prevention and
treating musculoskeletal disorders. In fact, sports figures such
as Carl Lewis, Charles Barkley, and Jim McMahon are known to use
acupuncture in order to improve training and performance, as
well as to speed up healing and to manage pain.

Allergies

Allergies are caused by the immune system reacting to
substances that are harmless to most people. Environmental
factors, such as pollen, dust and chemicals are common causes of
allergies. Similar, foods such as milk, wheat, and selfish can
cause allergic reactions. Allergies can cause watery eyes,
stuffy nose and sneezing. They can also cause more serious
problems, such as joint pain, diabetes, glaucoma, kidney
problems, depression, heart palpitations and learning disorders.
Through acupuncture, the body can be detoxified and the immune
system can be strengthened, thereby causing the body to cease
having allergic reactions.

Stress

Stress can lead to more serious health problems, such as heart
disease, cancer, stroke, and respiratory problems. According to
Chinese medicine, stress causes these problems when the liver
energy is out of balance. Therefore, acupuncture helps but this
energy back into balance, which relaxes the muscles and brings
about peace of mind.

Diseases and Disorder

Acupuncture can help with more than 50 different internal
medical problems. Some diseases that have been effectively
treated with acupuncture include: bronchitis, asthma, diarrhea,
ulcers, and hypertension. The exact acupuncture treatment varies
depending on the medical condition and may be used in
conjunction with other natural therapies, such as herbs and
massage.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is often brought on my depression,
stress, or an infection. No matter the direct cause, patients
with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome have immune system deficiencies
and most have a weakness in their internal organs. Acupuncture
can be used to improve the body’s immunity and, therefore,
eliminate Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

Menopause

Typical symptoms associated with menopause include night
sweats, hot flashes, insomnia, mood swings, and heart
palpitations. In Chinese medicine, these symptoms occur when the
Yin is out of balance. Yet other symptoms of menopause can
include weight gain, hypertension, indigestion, and water
retention, these are caused by an imbalance in the Yang. If
these are left untreated, it results in a Qi deficiency, which
causes feelings of fatigue, a dry vagina, decreases sex drive,
lower back pain, cold extremities, and incontinence. Acupuncture
therapy has been shown to help get the Yin and the Yang back
into balance, thereby reducing the symptoms of menopause.

PMS and Menstruation

Many women experience both emotional and physical pain and
discomfort before and after menstruation. Emotional difficulties
can include sadness, anger outbursts, depression, and
irritability. Physical pains can include pain in the lower back
and the lower abdomen. Acupuncture can help bring the body back
into balance and eliminate or lesson physical and social pain
associated with menstruation.

Acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine that is
quickly gaining acceptance in Western culture for its proven
ability to treat emotional and physical problems without the
side effects associated with other forms of medication.

Total causes relating to acne are unknown. The real, definite
remedies to acne are also unknown. There is a big orchestra of
remedies to acne however. Every musician takes out a different
tune, and thinks that he is the best. Who knows who is the best,
but at every short interval, a new member is added to the team
of orchestra. Acupuncture is one of the important members of
this acne medication orchestra.

Treating acne with acupuncture is the accepted way of life,
with many acne sufferers. The dermatologists also approve of
this treatment.

Acupuncture has the support of the centuries. It has the
support of the ancient wisdom. This wisdom was originated from
China, and sustained from generation to generation.

Acupuncture, popularly known as TCM, is to treat certain parts
of the body, the joints of energy. They are also called
meridians. These joints are stimulated by inserting sharp
needles. The system is as good as clearing those joints. The
blockages in the energy flow in your body are removed. These
blockages are responsible for diseases and all sorts of illness.

The evaluation of acupuncture has not been scientifically done,
if you talk in terms of modern science. But if you talk in terms
of the results of application of this system, the modern science
has to stand and stare. You have definite reports that two types
of acupuncture have dealt with the symptoms of acne
successfully. One of them is auricular acupuncture (acupuncture
applied to the ear) and the other one is electro acupuncture,
which uses a mild electrical current.

There are many forms of acupuncture and herbal medicine
acupuncture is one of them. Of them, two systems of herbal
medicines are popular in China: Tai Chi and Chi Kung. This
system originated in China in around 2500 BC. Western countries
were not aware of it; they were not enthusiastic about this
system of medicine till 1950. Now, they have begun to accept it
and adopt it. It is part of the western medicine now, and has
shown tremendous results.

Human body contains 59 meridians and 1000 pressure points.
People suffering from all sorts of conditions and serious
ailments like asthma, bronchitis and acne, including difficult
acne scars can be treated with acupuncture. It is very
successful in relieving pain. The treatment may not give uniform
benefits in all. The results vary from individual to individual.

This original system, has spread and accepted all over the
world. Also, the treatment is considered free from any side
effects.

By Kathryn Whittaker

The treatment for migraines and other menopause symptoms is not
the same in every part of the world. Different cultures have
different medicine practices and beliefs. However, it is
interesting to note that the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM),
acupuncture, is becoming a popular therapeutic method in Western
culture to treat a variety of psychological and physical
conditions including menopause.

TCM views menopause as the time in a woman’s life when her body
shuts down her natural monthly reproductive cycle because she
can no longer reproduce. However, it is believed that her body
stops menses to conserve her qi (body life energy), so as she
ages she can retain all of her resources.

Unlike women in western culture, for most women in the East,
menopause is rather uneventful. It is thought the reasons for
this is because Western women lead a more fast-paced,
stress-ridden lifestyle, and tend to consume poorer diets. Thus,
as a result, women in Western culture tend to experience far
more intense menopausal symptoms than their sisters in the East.

Despite the real causes of menopausal symptoms, the fact
remains that Traditional Chinese Medicine does not consider
menopause to be a syndrome. The thought is that women suffering
through menopause have a variety of qi problems such as
constrained liver qi and kidney yin deficiency. In other words,
their qi is imbalanced and is wreaking havoc on their mind and
body.

Thus, the goal of TCM is to uniquely treat each woman based on
her specific symptoms. This means that different techniques
aside from acupuncture may also be suggested, such as Chinese
herbs, lifestyle or dietary changes and exercises – all of which
are used to help restore balance to the body.

How does acupuncture work? Acupuncture is based on the belief
that there are approximately 2000 acupuncture points (trigger
points) throughout the body. These trigger points are linked to
one another via a group of 20 different meridians (pathways).
Meridians are responsible for conducting qi between the surface
of the body and the internal organs. Qi has a specific affect on
each point it passes through. When qi properly flows throughout
the meridians and all its points, it maintains a healthy balance
in the mind and body.

During an acupuncture treatment for menopause, an acupuncture
therapist will help a woman bring balance back to her body by
focusing treatment on the trigger points related to her
symptoms. Only some trigger points are used, and will vary
depending on the symptoms. Thus, every menopausal woman is
treated individually based on her problem.

Acupuncture is administered through the use of tiny, solid
needles that are inserted into the targeted trigger points. The
purpose of the needles is to help stimulate the meridians to
encourage qi production. This might mean needles could be
inserted into the shoulders, arms, legs or even the feet. If
inserted properly, needles shouldn’t cause pain or bleeding;
however, their may be slight discomfort or a tingling or numbing
sensation which fades fast. Treatment is often very relaxing,
and sessions usually last for 30 minutes.

Does acupuncture benefit menopause? Yes. Research has found
that most women who participated in different acupuncture
studies found relief from menopausal symptoms including:

• Hot flashes
• Insomnia
• Stress
• Anxiety
• Vaginal dryness

If you are interested in using acupuncture for alternative or
complimentary treatment to ease menopause symptoms, it is
imperative that you visit a qualified and experienced
acupuncture therapist, in order to realistically determine if
this method is an effective treatment option for you.

Remember, no two women are treated the same, and acupuncture
therapy is often long term, ongoing treatment.

Acupuncture provides miraculous healing of those awful body
pains that antibiotics and medicines otherwise fail to reduce.
Whether you are suffering from back pain, arthritis, joint
pains, or severe migraine/headache, acupuncture has a whole new
world of remedies for your intense suffering.

How does acupuncture work to heal body pains?

Acupuncture means inserting needles into the skin at precise
points to let pent-up energy start flowing within your body. The
theory originated in China and specifies about an essential life
energy “qi” [pronounced as chi] that flows through the body
along invisible channels called meridians. It is assumed that
when energy gets conjured up in certain points instead of
spreading in the entire body, then it leads to intense pain and
suffering. Acupuncture or insertion of needles leads to re-flow
of energy into all parts of the body and thus pain is reduced.

Acupuncture arthritis knee ankle pain

Arthritis is basically an inflammation in the joints, ligaments
or tendons that can occur in any part of the body. Ranging from
mild joint stiffness to crippling disability, arthritis becomes
more severe when the person wakes up from sleep. It occurs in
the form of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and gout that
gives people an unimaginable pain.

Acupuncture arthritis knee ankle pain treatment is simply
unique as it reduces the pain within just 3-4 sessions. At least
four to ten needles are inserted into your skin and you are made
to relax for 30 to 40 minutes. The needles are inserted into the
points lying along the meridians overlying muscles and various
other tissues but never into the spinal cord, brain, chest,
blood vessels, abdominal organs, arteries or veins.

Acupuncture for sinus, headache, and migraines

Migraine and sinus are severe forms of headaches, which are
characterized by throbbing, pounding, pulsating of nerves in
your head. While migraine means pain in any one part of the
head, sinus means pain in the entire temples, eyes and parts
around the nose. These are characterized with nausea, vomiting,
loss of appetite, fatigue, photophobia [extreme sensitivity to
pain] and constant irritability.

Although sinus and migraine often cannot be cured with
antibiotic medicines, acupuncture for sinus headache migraine
can do wonders to these pains. For these pains the best
treatments are manual acupuncture and auricular acupuncture.
This means no electro-acupuncture is used but each needle is
manually manipulated like twirling by the hands of acupuncture
practitioner. Auricular acupuncture means insertion of needles
into the earlobes to provide stimulation to the body.
Acupuncture seems to work best on fibromyalgia, back pains and
soft-tissue pains.

Acupuncture detox carpal tunnel syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition that is characterized by
pain, tingling and numbness in the areas of fingers, hands and
sometimes radiating up to the elbow. Acupuncture treats carpal
tunnel syndrome through scalp needling. This means acupuncture
needles are inserted into different points on the scalp and in
meridian points in hands and face. This involves applying
magnets, taped metal pellets and staples on acupuncture points
on the body, earlobes, face and tongue of the person to get
better and instant cure.

Simply try out with acupuncture to get miraculous cure within
minimum time.

Doctors and scientists from the Irvine university of California
have recently discovered a new method of lowering blood
pressure. This method is based on electroacupuncture, which
seems to have a significant effect in lowering blood pressure.
The method has been tested on rats, by inducing low electric
stimulation at the front of their legs, and their blood’s
pressure after the treatment was 40 percent lower than
before(their blood pressure had been artificially increased
before). This opens new doors for hypertension treatment, maybe
it will even replace the traditional medical treatments with
this ancient method.

These are all the methods that were tested :

Needles were inserted into:

- pericardium 5-6, and they were rotated every 10 to thirty
minutes. While this procedure was performed, the rats’ blood
pressure was being raised by doctors.

- the rats’ forelimbs, without any stimulation or twist, for 30
minutes.

Also, the pericardium 5-6 was electrically stimulated with
frequencies ranging from 2 to 100 hertz.

During these tests the changes in blood pressure were
continuously monitored, and the results carefully recorded. The
most successful in lowering blood pressure were those tests
which involved manual and electrical acupuncture, which had
serious effects in lowering blood pressure, lasting up to one
hour, and ranging from 33 to 36 percent. The best results were
recorded at the rats which had been stimulated by
electroacupuncture, especially at those treated at the
electroacupuncture frequency of 2 hertz.

However, the best results were recorded at the rats stimulated
at the heart (6-7) and stomach (36-37). Their blood pressure was
lowered up to 44 percent for the heart stimulation, and 36
percent for the stomach.

An important observation that doctors made was that this
electroacupuncture treatment can only lower blood pressure for
the hypertensive people, it has no effect for healthy people.

We can only that these treatments involving acupuncture will
soon be available to everyone, because they represent a very
good way to lower blood pressure

large domains of interests from agriculture to financing, even

In an age when numerous lifestyle-associated diseases
associated with unhealthy diets, constant stress and lack of
exercise leading to a variety of illnesses & complications
threaten to impede quality of life and longevity, many people
are turning to non-traditional forms of treatment. When
diagnosed with serious illnesses, people tend to harbor the
alarming thought that chronic disease may persist, impair or cut
life short, driving them to turn to alternative medicine for
relief or as supplementary treatment.

One of the most popular forms of alternative treatment is
acupuncture, a healing art dating back 3,000 years ago. Many
people in presence society turn to acupuncture to address
concerns like wrinkles, obesity, some bothersome conditions like
abdominal pain, or other lifestyle-related diseases that
threaten to take people before their time, not to mention
complications of serious ailments. The belief which holds much
water is that life energy flows through the physical body along
distinct pathways termed meridians. Along these meridians are
numerous acupuncture points. When stimulated by needles that are
inserted in the body, they act as generators of life energy.
This is how patients obtain relief for their bodily woes. The
alternative to sticking needles into the skin is a method that
more and more people are embracing – electro acupuncture.
Developed in China sometime in 1934 as an offshoot of manual
acupuncture using needles, it melds ancient techniques with
modern science.

In contrast to manual acupuncture, what a qualified
practitioner does in lieu of needle insertion is to stick
electrodes to the skin surface. In some instances, a handheld
probe is used. Carefully measured electrical stimulation is
applied through these contraptions, which will then stimulate
acupoints in the body. Most patients who undergo several
acupuncture sessions say they feel much better. It’s a natural
way of dealing with illnesses and addressing health complaints.

As a therapeutic approach for stubborn disorders, regular
treatments using electro acupuncture may be quite effective, but
as with other forms of medicine, expert advice and proper usage
is still needed. Extra caution has also been raised for people
with special conditions like heart disease.

Aside from the patients themselves, acupuncture practitioners
derive may benefits from using such modern devices for their
current practice. Applying electro acupuncture generally takes a
few minutes, freeing up time for the practitioner to attend to a
few other important tasks. The electrical device may also offer
a stronger dose of stimulation (depending on the illness cases)
without possible tissue damage that may be created by
traditional needle manipulation. There is greater control over
frequency and amount of stimulus that must be administered
vis-à-vis manual acupuncture. The downside is that the doctor or
qualified practitioner administering the treatment ends up not
directly taking part in the entire treatment process and not
observing all changes occurring in the patient. Nonetheless,
high-tech equipment available in the market nowadays come with
superior tracking devices and offer instant documentation and
graphical analysis. There are quality selections at special
prices that may even be obtained from online merchants.

Acupuncture is a very old healing system originating from
China. Contrary to popular belief this is system is based upon
solid scientific premises. It says that the human body has
certain nodal points just under the skin, which when stimulated
regulate the function of various organs and systems of our body.
Accordingly, whenever there is a problem that manifests itself
in the form of a disease or disorder, these nodal points are
pinpricked to bring back the balance in the body.

At the first glance, acupuncture can be very intimidating and
traumatic. There are few people who would really welcome the
idea of having needles prick them at various points in the body.
However, there are two points you need to have clear when you
are considering this treatment: (i) acupuncture is said to be
very effective, and (ii) the needles hardly penetrate the tip of
your skin because the nodal points are just under the skin –
hence, no pain or discomfort is experienced at any point of
time.

Acupuncture treatment is administered by a professional who is
licensed to do so. When you choose yours, pay close attention to
their experience and word-of-mouth feedback. These two factors
would be able to give you the true picture about professional in
question. You also need to ensure that the needles are
sterilized; you can insist of having this done in front of you
to be sure. The risk of AIDS and similar incurable diseases that
can be transmitted through infected needles is too large to take
a chance on this matter. This is one reason why many people
chose to replace acupuncture with acupressure; this method works
on the same principles with the exception that it does not
require perforation of your skin with needle as it works with
the help of pressure – hence, the name acupressure.

The treatment involves a few sittings whereby the acupuncturist
would apply needles into those points on your body that promote
relaxation and release of pain. Inflammation is often associated
with stress and pain, which in turn acts as a trigger to
anxiety. Acupuncture also aims at reducing inflammation and
pain, which often go hand-in-hand with stress, anxiety attacks
and depression. The changes are not instantaneous; it would take
a month or so with a few sessions per week until you see a
marked amelioration of your condition. But testimonies have
proved that the system works well.

The evidence shows that some people are greatly benefited by
this treatment and some are not. The one factor on which the
success of this treatment depends greatly is the proficiency of
the acupuncturist. It depends upon the depth of their knowledge
in this field, their experience and their ability to diagnose
your problem correctly. It is very much similar to traditional
doctors – some are excellent and have you on your way to
recovery in no time, while some are slower in identifying the
right diagnosis or worse, give you a wrong one. This is why it
is very important that you choose your acupuncturist carefully.
With the right professional, this treatment would not only free
you from anxiety, but also improve your overall health.

Hot flashes are a miserable trial of menopause; not to mention
an added burden to an estimated 65% of women being treated for
breast cancer. No matter what brings them on, any woman who has
ever had one feels the flushing, burning heat as never before.
Recent research by a team at Henry Ford Hospital looked at the
effectiveness of antidepressant Effexor (a common treatment
option for breast cancer patients) and a staple of traditional
Chinese medicine, acupuncture for handling these terribly
uncomfortable and disruptive symptoms.

While hormone replacement therapy is typically recommended for
menopausal women to help them beat the heat, these drugs aren’t
an option for breast cancer patients. For these women, Effexor
has been shown effective, as have Prosac and Paxil. Still, there
are many who refuse these therapies; either due to concern over
side effects or a desire to limit the number of drugs they are
putting into their bodies.

Researchers, led by radiation oncologist Dr. Eleanor Walker of
Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit worked with acupuncturist Beth
Kohn to complete the study. Participants were randomly assigned
to receive acupuncture treatments or take the Effexor for the
duration of the 12 week study. The results were presented at an
American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology meeting
held last week in Boston.

While both methods proved effective in reducing the number of
hot flashes in the subjects, those who received acupuncture
during the study noted other benefits as well. Without side
effects, the treatment brought subjects increased energy, a
better sense of well-being and more sexual desire.

Those who took Effexor during the study did find relief for
their hot flashes with the drug. This group however, also
reported side effects like nausea, headache, dizziness,
increased blood pressure, fatigue, anxiety and difficulty
sleeping. It’s just these types of side effects that keep many
breast cancer patients from using the antidepressant medication
to manage their hot flashes.
Beyond a lack of side effects, acupuncture provided the female
subjects a most lasting relief from their hot flashes.

“It was a more durable effect,” says Walker of findings that
support a more lasting effect of the natural, side effect free
acupuncture. The traditional Chinese medicine approach brought
relief for 15 weeks after treatments were stopped; Effexor
brought 2 weeks of relief once the drug had been discontinued.

As parts of traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture has been
practiced for thousands of years. In fact, references to
acupuncture appear in the oldest medical textbook in the world.
The techniques of Chinese medicine were virtually unknown to the
West until the 17th century when Jesuit missionaries sent to
convert the Chinese to Christianity came home to with stories of
treatment and recovery.

If you do decide to give acupuncture a try, discuss your plans
with your doctor or health care team first. You might be
surprised to find they support your efforts to find relief from
your hot flashes — especially if other treatments haven’t worked
(or worked well enough) for you. To find an acupuncturist in
your area, you can use the resources of the American Academy of
Medical Acupuncture or the American Association of Acupuncture &
Oriental Medicine.
